Mission Location: Limon, CO
Description:
CAMA-C deployed on a supercell that initiated off of the Palmer Divide. V2 first intercepted the cell SW of Limon. The CAM teams observed strong, cool inflow, a nice updraft base, but only weak low-level rotation was visible. As the updraft moved NE past CR 149, CAMA and CAMB un deployed and moved NE as well. During this time, low-level rotation was observed to increase by the mobile Doppler radar teams. CAMA deployed with DOW 5 very close to the mesocyclone on Resolis Rd. Visibility was poor and the circulation was becoming rain wrapped. Some ragged lowering was observed but no funnel. During this time period, CAMB deployed with MWR farther to the of the DOW5/CAMA location.
As the storm moved over Limon, it slowed down and began merging with other storms to the SE. The CAM teams moved eastward on I 70 and deployed near Genoa and Arriba, CO. The CAM teams had good viewing locations of the mesocyclones that formed on the north eastern and southwestern flank of the storm. While there was a report of a brief tornado touchdown, the CAM teams did not observe any well-defined, coherent funnels in contact with the ground. The teams did observe tight, strong rotation at low levels with dust being kicked up at low levels.
As the storm continued to move eastward, the CAM teams retreated to hwy 59 and ended the mission due to poor lighting near sunset.
HD video and DSLR imagery were collected by all three photogrammetry teams.
