Welcome to the Vermont Institute of Applied Meteorology at Lyndon State College (VIAM). VIAM was founded by Dr. Bruce Berryman in 2006 to engage students in Lyndon State College’s Atmospheric Sciences Program in experiential learning activities, and allow its faculty and staff to practice their skill in industy. As of 2014, nearly 100 students have been employed on numerous projects mainly involving the research and application of weather information to the transportation and energy sectors.
Our faculty, staff, and students have produced customized short-range weather forecasts for winter roadway maintenance, medium-range weather forecasts for investors in energy markets, general climatological studies, and forensic investigations involving weather and litigation. We are interested in connecting weather variability and economic activity in Vermont and the greater region.
