• Recall that the flow is geostrophic when the PGF and the CF are in balance

• this occurs when the isobars (height lines) are relatively straight

• what about the case when the isobars have curvature, as around highs and lows????

• when there is curvature in the flow, we must also consider the centripetal force acting on a parcel.....
